UberX/Lyft/Sidecar vs Commercial Insurance Companies

fl_blk_Black Lincoln Town CarFull disclosure:  I found Uber from an internet date.  Date fail.  Uber Love.  And, I use UberX to jet about town.

Read.  Insurance Limbo?

No such thing.  Either you’re covered, or you’re not.  Some policies are “silent” regarding certain exposures, leaving open the possibility for both coverage and decline, but this is in narrow circumstances.

I called two carriers today, to ask if they have an insurance policy that an amateur (Uber X, Sidecar, Lyft) driver could purchase giving them similar coverage as a PUC permitted “Black Car” driver.  NO, both companies, but BOTH offered that something in the future might change that.

Meaning, if they think they could make money selling something, they will.

My Guess:  Uber will create a drivers association, cut a deal with a carrier, get all the Uber X drivers to join the association and purchase insurance, and then bribe a politician to create strangling regulations to hurt competitors.  This is how the Biggest kill the Smallest.  Sidecar and Lyft will adapt as well.  Ergo….

Ride Apps ain’t going away.  Cab industry is too stupid to adapt, so don’t fret your $12 Marina to Mission ride with Todd in his Prius disappearing.  It might go to $13.20, but that’s the worst of it.
